Australia’s Steve Smith ruled out of Pakistan white ball matches – Sport

Australian hitter Steve Smith will miss Day 1 and T20 games against Pakistan to manage a left elbow injury, the team said Saturday.

Team physiotherapist Alex Kontouris said Smith experienced some discomfort in the second half of Australia’s 1-0 win over Pakistan in three test series matches.

“Given he suffered the same elbow injury last year, we felt it was important to manage it proactively,” Conturis said in a statement.

“Withdrawing him… means that Steve will have the time he needs to rehabilitate his elbow so he can continue playing in Australia.”

Smith said he doesn’t see his injuries as a big deal.

“But by getting the situation right now, we can prevent something more important from happening,” he added.

He will be replaced by Queensland legspinner Mitchell Swepson in the squad for three ODIs starting in Lahore on Tuesday and one-off T20 on 5 April.

Swepson, who made his test debut in Pakistan, has no ODI restrictions, but played his last out of seven T20 internationals against Bangladesh in August.

Selector George Bailey’s chairman said he chose the substitute because his panel thought the squad had plenty of options.

“We decided to include Mitchell Swepson in the white ball squad, because the bowling department will give them additional options on the surface that can help spinners well,” he added.

“Having been in Pakistan for the past month, he is familiar with the situation.”
