1 dead, 11 injured in IED blast near New Memon Mosque in Karachi’s Kharadar area – Pakistan

One person was killed and 11 others were injured in explosions near Iqbal Market and New Memon Mosque in Karachi’s Karadar district, Karachi administrator Murtaza Wahab said.

Wahab identified the deceased as a woman named Sania, Khalid’s wife.

A press release from the Karachi Police Media Cell said the cause of the explosion was an improvised explosive device (IED). Deputy Inspector General Badarudin was among the injured, he added, adding that he was “out of danger.”

The press release said, “A police officer picked up the accident and several other vehicles were damaged. The scene of the incident was secured by the criminal investigation team. The BD (bomb disposal) team is working to determine the nature of the explosion.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the incident and said the enemies of life and property “will be dealt with with iron hands”.

The Prime Minister requested a report on the incident to Inspector General of the Police Department, Mustaq Ahmed Mahar.

Tonight’s explosion is the second one to terrorize Karachi in less than a week. An improvised explosive device (IED) mounted on a motorcycle exploded on Thursday in Sadar, killing one passerby and injuring at least nine.

Former Sindh governor Imran Ismail has condemned the incident and called for immediate medical assistance to the injured.

“Anti-peace forces are back in Karachi,” he said. “The recent events are part of a well-planned conspiracy.”
